This was proposed signage for a university coffeehouse that was to be installed near a busy ceramic arts center. We wanted to capture something unique to that particularculture—and not hang just another generic coffee sign—yet it couldn’t be too specific and put-off the general public. I had to find a connection.
Watching an artist throw cups on a potter’s wheel, I noticed that at one point, her two-handed cradling that helped support and shape the wet, spinning clay was exactly how many coffee drinkers often held their own favorite mugs: it was a gesture familiar to both creators and end-users.
Alas, funding fell through for the café that year and the sign never got a chance to serve.
