In 2018, I designed this for the successful campaign of Brian Colón for State Auditor of New Mexico.
I was asked to create a logo that could speak to the entire state by somehow freshly incorporating the ancient Zia sun symbol—which has come to be proudly associated with New Mexico—but would also uniquely represent Mr. Colón.
Working closely with the candidate, I found the solution through his passion for the history and preservation of the Spanish colonial art of New Mexico. Characteristically, these traditional pieces feature fanned rosette shapes and often employ crests and crosses.
And so the logo integrates a crest/shield icon—signifying the auditor as protector of public funds; a central Zia sun—a balanced, open cross signifying accountability and transparency; and four simple rosettes that highlight the Zia quadrant-construction (as fours are very meaningful).
